Re-read: Chapter Eight- Loved

"I know enough of human behavior to recognize the signs of manipulation."

The Seeker continues to pester Wanderer as she readies the car for her trip to see Fords Deep Water. Wanderer also continues to question her decision of whether or not to remain in her human host. Though it would be easy to leave Earth, she feels there is still much to experience on this planet.

Melanie has been quiet since the decision was made to find Fords and her faint presence raises more questions within Wanderer. As Wanderer takes one last tour of her apartment, she wonders to herself if this decision to leave behind her job and current residence is just taking her one step closer to vacating the host's body.

With a curt farewell to the Seeker, Wanderer leaves San Diego and heads for Tucson. Though she is sure the Seeker would not follow up on her treat of following behind her, Wanderer glances back every so often to make sure she is alone. As their journey continues, Wanderer senses Melanie's wall retreat and she is once again cast into her memories.

In Melanie's memory, she, Jamie, and Jared are taking up residence at the Howe's secluded cabin. As Jamie galavants through the canyon, Jared and Melanie remain close to each other. Jared has not kissed her since the night they met and his distance causes her to question his intentions.

Melanie's memory skips ahead, remembering a sleeping Jamie with his head resting on a soft pillow, a luxury they have not experienced in quite some time. After closing the bedroom door, Melanie joins Jared on the couch. Once again, Melanie is curious about how Jared feels and if their situation is temporary. When she expresses her fear that they will part ways, Jared reassures her that he much prefers hers and Jamie's company.

While discussing the sleeping arrangements, Melanie senses Jared feels something for her and suggests they share the bed while Jamie takes the couch. He catches her meaning, but takes her suggestion as a feeling of obligation on her part. After a few moments of silence, she finally admits her feelings to him. Pulling her face to meet his, Jared responds
"Right now, if I was given the choice between having the world back and having you, I wouldn't be able to give you up. Not to save five billion lives." (78)

Re-read: Chapter Seven- Confronted

"Every world is a unique experience."

Keeping her word, the Seeker keeps tabs on Wanderer, even sitting in on her classes, including a particularly lively discussion about the Fire World. Once again, the Seeker edges Wanderer into an argument, this time violating Wanderer's relationship with Kathy by questioning the Comforter. She also learns that Earth is the Seeker's first planet.

The Seeker continues to taunt Wanderer about her seeming lack of control over her host body, revealing that she has gotten permission to be inserted into Melanie's body in the hopes of retrieving the information she seeks. Wanderer quickly shoots this notion down, noting that she is not a "skipper."

Her sadistic chatter continues as she mentions Racing Song, the soul who succumbed to Kevin, the violent host who attacked a Healer. Wanderer turns on the Seeker, questioning why she cares so much about finding those humans that have evaded implantation for so long.

"If even one soul is lost to your Jared or your Jamie, that is one soul too many. Until there is total peace on this planet, my job will be justified." (66)

Wanderer takes off, this time to distance herself from the Seeker and her accusations. Once home, Melanie comes back full force, demanding action against the Seeker. Wanderer is quick to remark the Melanie's defensive stance is one of the reasons her kind is better off in charge of Earth. While Melanie is still mulling over her thoughts, Wanderer begins to look for shuttle flights. Melanie is drawn into Wanderer's decision to see the Healer in Chicago before she makes her choice.

"The decision to kill me?"

"Yes, that one." (68)

Re-read: Chapter Six- Followed

"Human hosts need interaction."

As Wanderer's appointment with the Comforter continues, their talks turns to her interactions with others outside the classroom. Kathy encourages Wanderer to work on developing friendships with others of her kind, and even suggests pursuing romantic relationships, a thought Melanie meets with disgust. She goes onto to suggest that Wanderer could be with Jared, if he were to be captured and inserted with another Soul. Wanderer instinctively cries out "No!" before charging out of the office.

On her way home, Wanderer encounters the Seeker, who is eager to retrieve more information. The Seeker asks Wanderer if she has made anymore headway on the lines, presumably directions, that have been in her memories and dreams. In a moment of realization, Wanderer determines the lines are in fact directions that would lead to Jared and Jamie. Once again, Melanie steps in and blocks the path of her thoughts. The Seeker continues to express disappointment in Wanderer and the lack of viable information she has been able to retrieve.

"You're my only assignments. Until I find the rest of them, I may as well stick close to you and hope I get lucky." (58)

First Images from 'The Host'

Update: People.com has offers up two photos and an accompanying article. The issue will be on newsstands Friday.

Hunger Games fans who flock to theaters this weekend will also get a sneak peek at a very different kind of love triangle.

A teaser trailer for The Host, the film adaptation of the 2008 sci-fi romance novel by Twilight author Stephenie Meyer, will unspool before The Hunger Games begins.

"It's kind of an alien love story," director Andrew Niccol tells PEOPLE in this week's issue, which features an exclusive first look at the film, due March 29, 2013.

Irish actress Saoirse Ronan plays Melanie, one of the world's last remaining free spirits. As an alien named Wanderer assumes control of Melanie's soul, Melanie's remaining emotions still draw her to a handsome human named Jared (Max Irons).

Rounding out the cast: Diane Kruger, who plays Seeker, an alien sent to regulate the takeover of Earth's population.

Author Meyer is a producer on the film, but Twihards take note: vampires and werewolves are nowhere to be seen in The Host.

Re-read: Chapter Five- Uncomforted

“Hello there, Wanderer!”

After succumbing to Melanie’s memories once more, Wanderer visits her Comforter, Kathy. She is weary of entering the office as she has never needed a Comforter in any of her previous lives. In the months since her insertion, Wanderer has taken up a post at the university, finding her Calling as a Professor of History.

Wanderer and Kathy’s conversation takes a more personal turn as Wanderer inquires about her Comforter’s relationship with Curt. The two were inserted into a married couple during one of the first placements on Earth. In order to keep up their façade among neighbors, they needed to maintain the couple’s previous existence, even going by the hosts’ human names.

“Melanie still grieves for Jared” (44).

Wanderer is overwhelmed by  her own feelings of failure and the loss she feels from Melanie's memories. Kathy is shocked to hear Melanie is not fading, but growing stronger. She suggests Wanderer visit a Healer and consider reimplantation, which unites Wanderer and Melanie in a state of horror. Though other hosts have been reused, Melanie and her stubbornness would ultimately be destroyed. Wanderer quickly considers the Comforters' suggestion, but dismisses the notion since she has grown attached to her new host body.

"I wanted myself. I wouldn't let what was mine be destroyed" (48).
