Saoirse Ronan on Her Duel Roles

New MTV Rough Cut with Saoirse Ronan

An admitted fan of Meyer's other supernatural saga, "Twilight," Ronan recalled being blown away by the story of Earthling Melanie and the alien named Wanda who inhabits her.

"I had heard that 'The Host' was being made into a film and read the script and thought the concept was so incredible, just the idea of aliens sort of inhabiting Earth to perfect it," Ronan said. "That this was their goal — not to destroy it or really take it over, but just to perfect things and get rid of any negative emotion — was really intriguing to me, so then I read the book as well, and that was fantastic. It's huge. It's a big book."

At 600-plus pages, Meyer spared little detail bringing her post-apocalyptic tale to life, and according to Ronan, writer/director Andrew Niccol did right by the source material in his adapted script.

"He's obviously a fantastic writer," Ronan enthused. "That's his strong point: to do mind-blowing concepts like that. He's very good at that sci-fi type of drama. We've all said that how he was able to condense 600-plus pages into a 120-page script is kind of amazing."

With an impressive script to work from, Ronan's main challenge was portraying two separate characters in a single body.

"I'm viewing Melanie as a completely different character to Wanda, because they are. They are two separate young women," Ronan explained. "One happens to be an alien, and they're very different from each other. Melanie is a very strong, tough cookie — she's had to be, really. She's had to be tough in order to survive and take care of her younger brother. They've been on the run together for a very long time, and that's all taken away from her. It's very tough on Melanie."

And despite the usual portrayal of aliens as unsympathetic interlopers, Ronan had to try hard not to sympathize with Wanda.

"Wanda, it's an interesting thing to try and get rid of any negative emotion, to not feel any anger, because there are some points in the film where you think poor Wanda is being punished for certain things and being put through an awful lot."

Five Reasons to Be Excited About 'The Host'

VH1 editor  Sabrina Rojas Weiss and producer Kate Spencer give us five reasons to be excited for the upcoming release of The Host.

1. The Soul eyes look awesome. After hearing the Twilight crew complain that the contact lenses were kinda the hardest part about making the films, we were worried about this. For the uninitiated, the book is about people possessed by alien creatures called Souls, which give their hosts' eyes a weird silver halo. Instead of that weird blank stare colored contacts can give actors, these made them just seem creepily serene, as they should.

2. It is PACKED with action. The first scene is just like the book, showing Melanie being chased and jumping into an air shaft. And what we saw ended with a dramatic car/truck/helicopter chase.

3. Max Irons is super hot. Especially when making out with Saoirse Ronan in the rain.

4. Saoirse Ronan, as we suspected, is the perfect person to convey both the distress of invaded host Melanie Stryder and the eerie serenity of invader Wanderer. And the voice of Melanie in her head doesn't make you want to laugh inappropriately.

5. Jake Abel is super hot. Though kind of not when he's trying to strangle Saoirse Ronan, because that would be wrong.

Listen to them discuss The Host around the 3:35 mark.

Diane Kruger Discusses 'The Host' with Indiewire

What can you tell me about your role in "The Host?"

It's a book so I play The Seeker, which is sort of...

Villainous?

So you think, but it remains to be seen. But it was a great arc to play, it's a really fun character.

So you're done shooting?

Yes.

How did the production go for you?

It was intense. We finished up in New Mexico with the sandstorms and the nature of it was quite a challenge.

Was it nerve-wracking to embark on a project dreamed up by Stephenie Meyer, knowing that if this hits the same way as "Twilight," you'll be hounded?

Well it's different for me, right, because I'm not the young girl. It was actually great to have her, she was pretty much on set everyday. The challenge, or the good thing about this one is that the other two books are not out yet. So there was much more, at least for me, liberty to create actually my own version of that character. And having her there makes it easy so who knows what's going to happen in the next...

Did she tell you where she envisioned the character going?

In theory, yes, a little bit. Which is helpful, but it's not like I'm not locked in like some of the characters in "Twilight" are.
